What's In The Bag?

drawing of a bag

On the table in front of you sits an opaque bag. The bag contains 8 cubes. Aside from their colours, the cubes are identical. There are four possibilities:

1. the bag contains 4 cubes of each colour

2. the bag contains 6 red cubes and 2 green cubes

3. the bag contains 2 red cubes and 6 green cubes

4. the bag contains 8 red cubes

Your task is to develop a strategy for guessing which of the four possible situations is true.

Before you guess, you are allowed to conduct one of the following sampling procedures to gain partial information about the contents of the bag:

(1) Draw 2 cubes, look at them and remember them. Return them to the bag. Repeat this twice more.

(2) Draw 3 cubes, look at them and remember them. Return them to the bag. Repeat this once.

(3) Draw 1 cube, look at it and remember it. Return it to the bag. Repeat this seven more times.

In each case, it is safe to assume that the cubes are well-mixed in the bag at all times.
